Example of an Inequality

Go Back

Jake is purchasing some slabs of wood for his new backyard gazebo. Each slab of wood costs $5.00, and he wants to spend less than $1500. The size of each slab of wood is 2 square foot. The inequality will represent a number of slabs for the wood that he can actually purchase with a $1500 limit. This will also help him to figure out how large the gazebo can be.

Let x = the number of wood that can be purchased.

5x < 1500

5x/5 < 1500/5 =

x is < 300 slabs of wood

The size of the gazebo will be < 300
