Unit 5 IP Addresing and Security 2

Packet Filtering – is when you have a network and control access to the network by checking the outgoing and incoming packets. Also, by allowing the passing of time and halting the packets by IP address of the destination and sources.

Access Control Lists - are known as a list of entries that are used for the control with ACE. With ACE being inside of each ACL, this helps to identify the access rights that are allowed, audited, or denied for the person that is trusted.

There was time about a few years ago, I was transferring packets from Craigslist customers to process orders that they would make for my services. I began to experience problems where they would send an email to me that would not get to me until, the actual order was done, by someone who was grabbing the packets form the internet and processing the orders as if they were me. If I would have known about ACL’s and their benefits, I would have gotten all my orders completed and received the info packets that were sent by my customers for my service.

If I would have known about Access Control Lists, I would have given the person that I let use my network key, limited access. This would have saved me from the attacks that were administered on an administrative level. It was freaky and a little scary, but he didn’t stop, he kept going until we changed our service provider. This is where he asked again and was denied. The service provider knowledeged me on what was happening at told me to say no, and that’s when he fished other people in the family for the key until he got it, and he never tried again.
